The Ghraoui trade name was crowned in international fairs & competitions and was awarded certificates of excellence and gold medals in recognition of it's quality and in appreciation of it's excellence: - BEIRUT 1921 Silver Medal - CAIRO 1926 Golden Medal - ROME 1929 Golden Medal - PARIS 1931 Golden Medal - PARIS 1937 Golden Medal - NEW YORK WORLD`S FAIR 1939 Golden Medal Mr. Sadek A. Ghraoui, the head of the family's 4th generation, was the first to introduce and manufacture chocolate in the Middle East region. After his visit to France in 1931, he was determined to present this new product to the Middle East people, as people in this region were used to Arabic sweets like Maamoul& Knafeh. Chocolate for them was a very new product. They needed temptation to start appreciating this new product, Chocolate. Therefore, a sterling silver, gold spoon, or letter cutter used to be included in each box of chocolate in order to seduce people to buy this new delicatessen. At the beginning Ghraoui Chocolate was manufactured through importing chocolate in blocks(couverture) from Europe, then simply melting the chocolate blocks locally to convert them into different shapes, pieces and bars. The most famous Ghraoui chocolate product at that time was the milk chocolate with Almond, which was introduced to the local market in thin fancy wooden boxes imported from Austria. Ghraoui products were sold in London in Fortrum Mason, Selfidges, Harrods. They even gained the title of purveyors to H. M. The Queen of England through their presence in Army& Navy Store in London. While in Paris, Ghraoui products were sold in Harrods and Hediard. During the early Forties, a Ghraoui Chocolate store was opened in Beirut in the Bab Idriss district. Chocolate was always manufactured in the factory in Damascus and transported to different cities in the Levant until the economic and financial separation between Syria and Lebanon during the mid fifties. At that time an additional independent manufacturing unit was established in Beirut in order to service the demand in the Lebanese market. This factory ceased to exist on 1975 with the start of the civil war in Lebanon. Ghraoui chocolate continued manufacturing in Damascus mainly to service the local market. In keeping with its reputation, Ghraoui Chocolate Industry today continues to offer the highest quality products, and plans to expand its manufacturing capacity and re-establish its presence in major Arab and European cities.
